Day

Arrival in Tanzania & Transfer to Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by your mountain guide and transferred to Moshi for your overnight stay. After check-in at the hotel, you will have time to relax and recover from your journey. Later in the day, your guide will conduct a detailed Kilimanjaro climbing briefing, including a gear check and an overview of the Machame Route. This is an opportunity to ask questions and ensure you are fully prepared for your climb to Africa's highest peak.

Day

Machame Gate → Machame Camp

After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, your guide and mountain crew will transfer you to Machame Gate (1,800m), where you will complete registration formalities before starting your climb. The trail passes through lush rainforest filled with giant trees, colorful birds, and unique plant species. This scenic hike gradually ascends through the forest and offers your first experience of Kilimanjaro's diverse ecosystems. Upon arrival at Machame Camp, your crew will have prepared the campsite and a hot meal for you to enjoy before dinner and overnight rest.

Day

Machame Camp → Shira Camp

After breakfast at Machame Camp, you will leave the rainforest zone and enter the heather and moorland region of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail becomes steeper as you gain altitude, offering your first clear views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding landscapes. The vegetation changes dramatically, giving you a true sense of climbing through different climate zones. After several hours of steady trekking, you will reach the Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful high-altitude areas on the mountain. Upon arrival at Shira Camp, your crew will set up camp and prepare hot meals for dinner.

Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

After breakfast, you will continue your ascent across the alpine desert zone towards Lava Tower (4,600m), an important acclimatization point on the Machame Route. The trail offers dramatic volcanic landscapes and wide open views of the mountain. After lunch at Lava Tower, you will descend to Barranco Camp following the "climb high, sleep low" principle, which helps your body adjust to altitude and improves summit success. The descent into Barranco Valley is scenic, with views of the famous Barranco Wall ahead.

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

After breakfast, you will begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling and non-technical section of the route. Although steep in parts, it is safe and offers incredible views of glaciers and valleys below. After reaching the top, the trail continues through rolling ridges and alpine terrain before arriving at Karanga Camp. This shorter hiking day is designed to support acclimatization and allow your body to rest and recover for the higher elevations ahead.

Altitude: 3,960m – 4,035m 

Hiking distance: Approximately 5 km 

Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Day

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Today you will ascend into the alpine desert zone as you head towards Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit attempt. The terrain becomes more rugged and exposed, with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding mountain landscape. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, your crew will set up camp and prepare an early dinner. Your guide will then give a detailed summit briefing before you rest in preparation for your midnight ascent.

Altitude: 4,035m – 4,673m 

Hiking distance: Approximately 4 km 

Hiking time: 3–4 hours

Day

Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Around midnight, you will begin your summit climb under a sky full of stars. The trail is steep and challenging as you make your way to Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a truly unforgettable moment with breathtaking views above the clouds. After celebrating and taking photos, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Altitude: 4,673m – 5,895m – 3,100m 

Hiking distance: Approximately 17–19 km 

Hiking time: 10–14 hours

Day

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

After breakfast, you will descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Along the way, you can enjoy the final views of Kilimanjaro’s forest ecosystem. At the gate, you will receive your summit certificate after completing park formalities. You will then be transferred back to Moshi, where you can relax, shower, and celebrate your successful climb.

Departure Day

After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight. If you wish, you can extend your trip with a Tanzania safari, Zanzibar beach holiday, or other experiences.

  • By default, our Kilimanjaro climbing packages include shared accommodation in twin or double rooms before and after the trek. Single rooms are available at an additional cost.

  • Hotels in Moshi usually include breakfast only, unless stated otherwise in your itinerary.

  • During the climb, all meals on the mountain are included and freshly prepared by our mountain chef.

  • On Mount Kilimanjaro, accommodation is in quality camping tents equipped for high-altitude trekking. Our mountain crew sets up and manages the camp at each overnight stop.

  • Weather conditions can vary greatly, from warm rainforest temperatures to freezing conditions near the summit. Proper clothing and equipment are essential.
