Day

Arrival in Tanzania & Transfer to Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by your mountain guide and transferred to Moshi for your overnight stay. After check-in at the hotel, you will have time to relax and recover from your journey. Later in the day, your guide will conduct a detailed Kilimanjaro climbing briefing, including a gear check and an overview of the Machame Route. This is an opportunity to ask questions and ensure you are fully prepared for your climb to Africa's highest peak.

Day

Nalemoru Gate (Rongai Gate) → Simba Camp

After breakfast, you will drive to Nalemoru Gate (Rongai Gate) for registration and permit formalities before starting your climb. The trail begins through peaceful pine forest and farmland areas on the northern side of Kilimanjaro. This section is quiet and less crowded compared to other routes. You will gradually ascend while enjoying views of the Kenyan plains and forest wildlife before reaching Simba Camp.

Day

Simba Camp → Kikelewa Camp

Today’s hike continues through heath and moorland zones with increasing views of the mountain landscape and wide open scenery. The trail is gentle and offers good acclimatization while you enjoy clear views of Kibo Peak and surrounding valleys. You may spot giant lobelias and unique alpine vegetation along the route. The day ends at Kikelewa Camp, a peaceful and sheltered campsite perfect for mountain rest and recovery.

Kikelewa Camp → Mawenzi Tarn Camp

After breakfast, you continue ascending into more rugged alpine terrain with dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak becoming more visible. The landscape becomes rocky and open, offering a true high-altitude trekking experience with fewer trees and cooler temperatures. This section is important for acclimatization as you climb steadily higher. The day ends at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, beautifully located near a mountain lake surrounded by dramatic peaks.

Mawenzi Tarn Camp → Kibo Hut

Today you cross the vast Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, a wide alpine desert with volcanic rocks and open landscapes. The trail is long but steady, offering a true wilderness mountain experience with cold winds and thin air. As you approach Kibo Hut, the environment becomes more extreme and quiet. Your guide will prepare you for the upcoming midnight summit attempt with full briefing and safety instructions.

Day

Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Camp

Around midnight, you begin your challenging summit climb under cold skies and bright stars. The ascent is steep as you pass Gilman’s Point and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for rest and continue down to Horombo Camp. This long day is the most rewarding part of your entire Kilimanjaro adventure.

Day

Horombo Camp → Marangu Gate → Moshi

After breakfast, you descend through moorland and lush rainforest toward Marangu Gate while enjoying your final views of Mount Kilimanjaro ecosystem. The trail becomes easier as oxygen levels increase and temperatures warm up. At the gate, you will receive your official summit certificate after completing park formalities. You are then transferred to Moshi for rest, celebration, and relaxation after your successful climb.

Departure Day

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight. Depending on your travel plan, you may also extend your stay for a Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach holiday experience. Our team will assist you with smooth airport transfer and final travel arrangements. This marks the end of your unforgettable Rongai Route Kilimanjaro adventure.

  • By default, our Kilimanjaro climbing packages include shared accommodation in twin or double rooms before and after the trek. Single rooms are available at an additional cost.

  • Hotels in Moshi usually include breakfast only, unless stated otherwise in your itinerary.

  • During the climb, all meals on the mountain are included and freshly prepared by our mountain chef.

  • On Mount Kilimanjaro, accommodation is in quality camping tents equipped for high-altitude trekking. Our mountain crew sets up and manages the camp at each overnight stop.

  • Weather conditions can vary greatly, from warm rainforest temperatures to freezing conditions near the summit. Proper clothing and equipment are essential.
